The Avro Vulcan is recognized as the world's first delta-wing strategic bomber in aviation history. Designed with a large payload capacity in mind (up to 10,000 pounds) the Vulcan was suited as an airborne impediment to threats to the UK. Squadron service began with the No.83 Squadron at RAF Waddington (1957), nine years after their historic raid on the Ruhr Valley. The Avro Vulcan B.2 variant was produced more than any other RAF Vulcan. The development of the aircraft was pushed due to the advancement of the Soviets' anti-aircraft technology as well as instabilities with the original Bristol Olympus engines. The V-bomber crews were equipped with a nuclear stand-off missile that could be fired from 100 miles away and out of reach of the Soviet surface-to-air missiles.
