The Avro Shackelton operated with the RAF for an extensive career and operated as the first maritime patrol aircraft, and later as the RAF's signature Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft. Under the designation MR.1 it would serve frontline service until 1993. The MR.2 (1953) was designed with a variant nose when compared to the MR.1. The nose contained a pair of 20mm cannons and a Dorset turret. The MR.2 Shackleton housed a substantial armament of depth chargers and torpedoes, making it ideal for maritime patrols. The AEW.2 remained active until 1991, but the MR.2 was succeeded by the Nimrod in the 70s.
