Arguably WWII's most exceptional fighter aircraft, the Mustang continued as the USAF's main prop-driven fighter, with all others placed in secondary roles or withdrawn from service. The USAF aircraft made the transition from P for Pursuit to F for Fighter in 1948, resulting in the Mustang becoming the North American F-51D.
