Production on the M4A3(76) began in 1944 under the guidance of the Chrysler Corporation. Deliveries of the tanks arrived in Italy and France in August of 1944. A small number of the tanks were deployed with the French 2nd Armored Division during efforts to liberate Paris from German occupation. The French 2nd Armored Division is thought to have been the first unit to use the M4A3(76)W in battle.
